We have the opening round of the TSL Cup F1 96 season behind us, and it's fair to say that the new campaign got off to an exciting start.

The first race delivered tension, dramatic moments, wheel-to-wheel battles for every inch of the track, and several unexpected twists. As is often the case at the beginning of a new era, a few areas also emerged that will need some fine-tuning. The league management has already announced that it will take the lessons learned from the season opener into account and adjust certain rules and organizational aspects to ensure that the upcoming races are even better and fairer.

But let's return to the action at the Red Bull Ring, where there was plenty to watch from the very beginning. Qualifying itself produced unexpected drama. Due to technical issues, the original qualifying session had to be canceled and restarted, this time as a five-minute shootout. The shortened format left virtually no room for mistakes, with each driver essentially having just one genuine opportunity to set a competitive lap. Jan Pospíšil, driving for Ferrari, handled the pressure best, claiming pole position by a mere 0.047 seconds ahead of Grossbi in the Benetton. Such a tiny margin made it clear that an incredibly close race was in store.

The race start certainly lived up to expectations. Turn 1 turned into complete chaos, leaving several cars with significant damage. The biggest losers were Anderson's McLaren and Klesnil's Williams, whose races were heavily compromised within the opening few hundred meters. However, the chaos was far from over. At Turn 3 came one of the biggest incidents of the race, as Jan Pospíšil's Ferrari collided with Jelínek's Ligier. Both cars suffered terminal damage and were forced to retire. For Pospíšil, what had looked like a highly promising race day ended in bitter disappointment.

Once the opening incidents had settled down, the battle at the front began to take shape, with Sonbudak in the Ferrari and Grossbi in the Benetton putting on a thrilling fight for victory. Both drivers showed outstanding pace and remained within striking distance of each other for virtually the entire race. Following the pit stop cycle, the Ferrari driver emerged in the lead, appearing to have one hand on the victory.

Grossbi, however, refused to give up. During the second half of the race, he steadily chipped away at the gap before finally making his move after several laps of relentless pressure. A superb overtaking maneuver put him into the lead, and from that moment onward he controlled the race with confidence, taking the checkered flag as the winner of the historic opening race of the new TSL Cup F1 96 season.

Ondřej Vašek also delivered an outstanding performance for Sauber. After early-race incidents dropped him to the back of the field, he refused to surrender and produced a remarkable recovery drive. Thanks to consistent pace, clean overtaking, and excellent strategy, he fought his way all the way up to third place. His comeback was one of the standout stories of the race, and a well-earned podium finish was the perfect reward for his efforts.
